June 23, 1845

On June 23, 1845, a special session of the legislature of Texas voted in favor of annexation by the United States. For almost ten years, Texas had been an independent republic. The leaders of the republic first voted for Texas to be annexed in 1836, soon after it gained independence from Mexico, but the U.S. Congress was unwilling to admit another state which permitted slavery. Sam Houston, military commander during the Texas War for Independence from Mexico and the first President of the Republic of Texas, had been a strong advocate of annexation.

In 1845, the political climate proved more favorable to the request for statehood, and, in 1846, the Lone Star flag of the Republic of Texas became the flag of the twenty-eighth state in the Union. [...]
