Iraq resolution getting unanimous support

UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- The United States will get unanimous support for its new resolution on Iraq after Syria decided to join Germany, France and Russia in backing the measure aimed at attracting more troops and money to the war battered-country, a U.N. diplomat said Thursday.

Earlier Thursday, the three European opponents of the U.S.-led war against Iraq said they would vote in favor of the resolution. That had left only Syria's vote in doubt. [...]

The announcement at a European Union (news - web sites) summit in Brussels marked a dramatic shift by the three countries, who had bitterly opposed the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

"We agreed that the resolution is really an important step in the right direction," Schroeder said after a 45-minute conference call with presidents Jacques Chirac of France and Vladimir Putin of Russia. "Many things have been included from what we proposed. This led us ... to jointly agree to the resolution."

Apparently reckless unilateral warmongering cowboy imperialism for oil has a more subtle side.
